Chromosomal Genotype
This is a reduced genome strain derived from E. coli K-12 strain MG1655.[1] The MG1655 genome was reduced by 8.1%. The 12 deletions that were constructed removed most of the cryptic prophages, phage remnants, and IS elements from MG1655. Also deleted were a some genes of unknown function. In total, 409 ORF's and 2 stable RNA genes were deleted.

Additional reduced genome strains with more of the genome deleted from MG1655 were constructed and characterized by Pósfai et al. (2006). [2]
